FROM THE HELM

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD IN THE WAKE OF BERYL?

In late June hurricane Beryl tore a swath of destruction through the southeast Caribbean, the strongest early season hurricane ever recorded.  Her path, through parts of Grenada and the Grenadines, leveled nearly every structure on several islands and caused massive damage to boats that did not leave the area.  The unprecedented power of Beryl, so early in the season, was a result of record high sea temperatures, a trend that is forecasted to continue in the coming years.

As Beryl approached, nearly 200 cruising boats headed south to Trinidad from Grenada and the Grenadines with the hope of getting out of harm’s way.  Many returned north after the storm passed to deliver relief supplies to those who lost everything.

We have all seen photos of the hundreds of cruising boats that were washed ashore or sunk, and those that were hauled and tied down did not fare much better.  Several Salty Dawg members lost their boats and news of exorbitant fees being charged to assist in salvage continue to surface.

DOWNEAST RALLY, 2024

Written by Tim Zimmermann, Laughing Gull

I am a new Salty Dawg, with ambitions to sail with the Dawgs to Antigua this winter, and across the Atlantic to the Azores next summer. So I thought it would be fun to join the Downeast Rally, to experience the Salty Dawg vibe, see how a Rally unfolds, and meet some Dawgy boats and their crews.

The Downeast Rally starts with an early July passage from Hampton, VA to Newport, RI. That’s a modest 3-4 day offshore leg, and a good way for newer cruisers to spend some time at sea, and gain some experience. From Newport, the fleet sails north to Rockland, Maine, and from Rockland there is a mini-cruise through Maine waters.

ONE DESIGN SAILING IN MAINE

It seems that almost every harbor in Maine has its own fleet of classic, lovingly maintained one-design sailboats.  As summer communities were established along the coast in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, they established yacht clubs and commissioned fleets for their members.  Many of them claim to have “one of the oldest” fleets in the country, although that distinction must surely belong to North Haven Casino, whose North Haven Dinghy Class was founded in 1887.  All of these classes race actively and see heavy use by junior sailing programs.  While it seems impossible to discern differences between some fleets, such as the Boothbay Harbor One Design, Christmas Cove 21 and Hodgdon Brothers 21, don’t dare to question the uniqueness of each design!

Q&A with Arno Chrispeels: Navigating International Health Insurance for Sailors and Cruisers

Diane MacDonald-Mackenzie spoke with Arno Chrispeels of International Health Insurance Solutions

Q: Can you tell us a little about your background and how you developed a passion for sailing?

I grew up in San Diego, California, and started sailing when I was 10 years old at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center. I eventually became an assistant instructor at their summer camp and then raced FJ’s for one season at University of California Santa Cruz. Ever since I first stepped foot on a keelboat, I’ve been fascinated by the idea of being able to sail anywhere in the world. Though my cruising experiences have been pretty limited and only along the west coast of the US, I am planning to purchase a boat and start cruising within the next two years.
